Fragile is an interactive film about the study ‘Digital Media Design’ (DMD) at the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU). The project was part of a campaign to promote the study and is intended to show potential new students what it takes to be a digital media designer. Fragile combines classic film with interaction to create a unique experience.

The start of the film shows a confused DMD student named Vincent who’s sitting at a therapist, the user takes the role as therapist to help Vincent untangle his life and to help him when needed. By doing this you help vincent and slowly find out all about the study, the motivation, the work, the inspiration and the presentations that make the study different from any other digital design study. The sets for fragile were entirely build at the HKU, using scraps and materials from students.

Development

Fragile was developed in Flash and uses a complex preloader that loads scenes sequentially, this was done to keep it playing fluently without any waiting periods in between scenes, the used video material is around 120mb in size.
