De docent geeft nu een centrale les voor een digitaal schoolbord en de kinderen maken hun rekensommen op de computer, maar de lessen zijn nog altijd groot en deels hetzelfde. en de meerwaarde die ICT en nieuwe media zouden kunnen bieden worden nog niet optimaal ingezet. Nieuwe media en ICT vereist ook nieuwe didactiek.

“Oma is de weg kwijt” is een afstudeerproject van de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht ontwikkeld in samenwerking met Anke Klein Zieverink en Kim Deuning. Het project bestaat uit een interactief lespakket waarbij een multi-touch tafel op unieke wijze in het geschiedenis onderwijs van het basisschool wordt geïntegreerd.

Concept

De leerlingen worden meegenomen in een archeologisch avontuur. Een vrouw is op een afgelegen plek in het bos gevonden en is haar geheugen kwijt. Door te graven door verschillende grondlagen, en gevonden voorwerpen te onderzoeken leren de kinderen meer over de Nederlandse geschiedenis vanaf de jaren ’40 tot nu en leggen ze een link tussen hun persoonlijke (familie) geschiedenis en de Nederlandse geschiedenis, door hun persoonlijke geschiedenis te verwerken in het verhaal.

De leerlingen moeten in kleine groepjes de vrouw helpen, ze leren samen problemen op te lossen, het presenteren van hun bevindingen en het beargumenteren van de gemaakte keuzes. Dit alles met als doel het geheugen van de gevonden vrouw te herconstrueren en het mysterie rondom de plek in het bos op te lossen. Naast de actieve les in de klas moeten de leerlingen thuis, samen met hun (groot)ouders kleine opdrachten uitvoeren gericht op het verhogen van de betrokkenheid van de ouders bij de opleiding van het kind, en het delen van familie geschiedenis waardoor het kind zich zekerder voelt over zijn eigen identiteit.

Leerlingen hebben de mogelijkheid elementen aan het systeem toe te voegen, deze eigen bijdrage betrekt het kind niet alleen bij het verhaal maar creëert ook een dynamische collectie waaruit onderzoeksresultaten met betrekking tot interesses van het kind voor eventuele vervolglessen kunnen worden geëxtraheerd. Door het koppelen van de wereld van het kind en de les, gecombineerd met de mogelijkheden van nieuwe media worden kinderen persoonlijk betrokken bij de les met als doel het verhogen van motivatie en interesse wat uiteindelijk lijdt tot een beter leerrendement.

Techniek

Voor dit project heb ik me vooral bezig gehouden met het ontwikkelen van de multitouch en scan applicatie in Flash (Actionscript 3). Het systeem bestaat uit een dynamische zandlaag met objecten, een spel waarbij de gevonden objecten in de juiste volgorde dienen worden geplaatst, een scan applicatie en een complexe video en audio player waarmee het verhaal vertelt wordt.

het lespakket bestaat uit 5 lessen en een overzicht van het resultaat (voor bijvoorbeeld een ouderavond) en een ongelimiteerd aantal groepjes leerlingen. hiervoor is de applicatie volledig dynamisch opgezet, waarbij alle door de leerlingen toegevoegde data (objecten) extern worden ingeladen door middel van een XML bestand met een live update functie, hierdoor is het mogelijk dat gescande objecten direct zichtbaar zijn op de multitouch tafel en invloed hebben op het verloop van het verhaal en de les.

De multitouch tafel applicatie maakt gebruik van de (open source) technologie ontwikkeld door de NUIgroup het is mogelijk voor de gebruiken om objecten te slepen en roteren, maar er zijn ook een aantal unieke functionaliteiten toegevoegd waarbij meerdere gebruikers nodig zijn om objecten te verplaatsen (samenwerken) en het gebruik van een kwast om gevonden objecten eerst voorzichtig te ontdaan van een stoflaag voordat ze geanalyseerd en gebruikt kunnen worden.

Tijdens het ontwikkelen van de applicatie heb ik veel onderzoek gedaan naar de mogelijkheden en het gebruik van nieuwe (interactieve) media en ICT in het basisonderwijs en de rollenverschuiving die dit met zich meebrengt.

A Website for the Graduation Film by Michiel ten Kleij (Red Cloak Films) A short film based on a famous dutch fairy tale about a character called “Holle Bolle Gijs”. A multidisciplinary team consisting of students and industry people are working on voluntarily basis to make this film a reality.

For this project I developed a simple and easy to update website, that fits the mood of the film. The main goal of the website is to present the movie to the public and to allow donations to generate funding for the project.

BUY? Posters and Flyer

BUY? was made available to the public for the first time at the Projectenmarkt 2009 at the Utrecht School of Arts, for these event I designed 3 posters and a flyer. The idea behind the posters was to create something visually appealing, but also generating curiosity by keeping certain things hidden. The Flyer had an added function, being a business card for the members of crowdconnection.

I was part of a group called “crowdconnection” which was assembled by the HKU to create innovative concepts for the Telematica Institute. I helped develop various concepts including “Mirror me this” and “BUY?”. BUY? is an interactive installation which changes the way we shop, it consists of an interactive fitting booth connected to clothing items in a store, instead of letting yourself being manipulated by branding and image, BUY? aims to visualise the production proces, designers view and social network of clothing. These elements should have a more prominent role in the shopping process.

BUY? Installation Design

BUY? was an ubiquitous computing experiment, the goal was to create a whole new shopping experience, where the user was presented with relevant information previously unavailable. To accomplish this we chose to make the user interface controls almost completely sensor based (using infrared LEDs, augmented reality QR tags and an ultrasonic sensor), the GUI is a combination of the persons reflection in the mirror combined with floating elements projected around it, due to the nature of the specially coated mirror it’s impossible to see how this effect is achieved, where the projection is coming from and where the edges are. A truly unique experience that is hard to describe.

I created the interface elements and a total of 12 short content videos for the first prototype of the BUY? installation, the interface has 3 icons, each representing a different pathway the user can choose, Concept (Light Bulb icon), Production (Sprocket icon) and Social (Heart icon). Concept shows the idea behind the print on the shirt, where the idea originated and the designers opinion or statement. Production visualises the production process and the materials used. Social shows information about the people who bought the shirt, their lifestyle and their opinion about the product.

Mirror me this is een concept waarbij reizigers tijdens het wachten op roltrappen en loopbanden als karakters in een interactieve film deelnemen, een concept ontwikkeld in samenwerking met Michiel ten Kleij en Sacha Gertsik in opdracht van het Telematica instituut en de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht.

Gebruikers zien een combinatie van hun eigen reflectie en geprojecteerde beelden die reageren op de beweging van de gebruiker, dit maakt het mogelijk voor de gebruiker om onderdeel te worden van een narratief met interactie moment wat niet langer dan 30 seconden duurt.

Doordat er meerdere reizigers op de roltrap staan ontstaat er een sociale band tussen reizigers, een onderzoek naar ubiquitous computing in de sociale ruimte.

Flyer & Sticker

I also designed a simple flyer with the petition on the back, which was handed out at festivals in Holland in the summer of 2008. The flyer was also translated into German and used for a Virus Free Generation event in Berlin. A Sticker was made and spread through Amsterdam and Rotterdam, everywhere the tour went, the stickers just magically appeared.

All the print design was created in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign

A total of 15 webisodes were edited in Africa during the tour (of which I did half), using the material shot for the documentaries. The aim was to create a short but personal video in which the artists experiences would play a central role. To make it possible to upload a new video every 3 days they had to remain short and small in filesize. All the video was edited on a macbook pro with final cut pro and a couple external hard drives. It made me realize that no matter where I am, I can always do my work, even in a country like Malawi, where even electicity isnt a sure thing.

Photography

There were over 7000 pictures taken during the tour, of which a large portion were taken by me, a lot of them (about 450) made it onto the website and some were even printed in African newspapers and magazines.

What is MythII Soulblighter

Myth is a real time tactical game based on squad and unit management rather than resource gathering and expansion. Thanks to a realistic physics engine and meticulous unit balance, gameplay is highly varied and flexible. Originally released by Bungie in 1997, Myth defined a completely new genre. However, with today’s standards in hardware, the game has grown somewhat dated. With development now the responsibility of the community, Project Magma have brought Myth up to date. You can also play Myth online, both cooperatively and competitively. The faithful fan community that has sprung up around the game as a result, has produced an incredible array of 3rd party maps and add-ons that have further extended the life of the series.

All these add-ons were created with the provided map editors that came with the game, Photoshop, Cinema 4D and a variety of community created tools.
